How to Choose a Homeopathic Potency: 6C, 30C, 200C and Beyond
One of the most common questions from people new to homeopathy is: "Which potency should I use?" You've found the right remedy — but then you're faced with a shelf of options: 6C, 30C, 200C, 1M. What does it all mean, and does it matter?
The short answer: yes, potency matters. Here's a practical guide to help you choose with confidence.
What Does "Potency" Mean in Homeopathy?
Potency refers to the degree of dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking) a remedy has undergone during preparation. Counterintuitively in homeopathy, a higher number does not mean a stronger concentration — it means a greater dilution. The two most common potency scales are:
- C scale (centesimal): Each step is a 1-in-100 dilution. So 30C means the remedy has been diluted 1:100 thirty times.
- X scale (decimal): Each step is a 1-in-10 dilution. So 6X means diluted 1:10 six times. Cell salts are most commonly available in 6X.
The General Rule: Match Potency to the Situation
A helpful way to think about potency selection is to consider the nature and depth of the complaint:
6C — Gentle and Frequent
Lower potencies like 6C act gently and are often repeated more frequently. They are a good choice when:
- You are new to homeopathy and want to start cautiously
- The complaint is mild or superficial (e.g., minor skin irritation, mild digestive discomfort)
- You are treating someone sensitive, such as an elderly person
- You want to take the remedy over a longer period
30C — The Most Versatile Potency
30C is the most widely recommended potency for home and self-care use. It strikes a balance between gentleness and effectiveness and is suitable for:
- Acute complaints — colds, flu, minor injuries, digestive upsets
- Emotional or stress-related symptoms
- First-time use of a remedy when you're unsure of the potency
- Most everyday situations where you've identified a good remedy match
If you're ever in doubt, 30C is a safe and sensible starting point.
200C — Deeper and Longer-Acting
200C is a higher potency that acts more deeply and for a longer duration. It is typically used:
- When a lower potency has helped but the effect has plateaued
- For complaints with a strong emotional or mental component
- Under the guidance of a qualified homeopathic practitioner
Higher potencies are generally not recommended for self-prescribing without experience, as they require a more precise remedy match to be effective.
1M and Above — Constitutional Use
Potencies of 1M (1,000C) and higher are considered very high potencies and are almost exclusively used by experienced homeopathic practitioners for constitutional treatment — addressing deep-seated, chronic conditions based on a full individual assessment.
How Often Should I Take a Homeopathic Remedy?
Frequency depends on both the potency and the acuteness of the situation:
- Acute, intense symptoms: A 30C may be taken every 15–30 minutes initially, reducing frequency as symptoms improve.
- Mild or improving symptoms: Every few hours or once or twice daily.
- Chronic conditions: Less frequent dosing, often once daily or less — ideally guided by a practitioner.
A key principle in homeopathy: stop taking the remedy once symptoms clearly improve. The remedy has done its work.
Tips for Getting It Right
- The remedy match matters more than the potency. A well-chosen remedy at 30C will outperform a poorly chosen remedy at any potency.
- When in doubt, start low (6C or 30C) and observe the response before moving higher.
- Keep a note of what you took, when, and what changed — this helps you and any practitioner you consult.
- Consult a qualified homeopath for chronic, complex, or serious conditions.
